What is faith?

Faith is one of the 9 gifts of the Holy Ghost according to 1 Cor 12:8-10; Faith is classified as a power or miracle working gift because of its supernatural abilities that enable believers to perform extraordinary acts, demonstrating God’s power.

Hebrews 4:2; [2] For indeed the gospel was preached to us as well as to them; but the word which they heard did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in those who heard it. Faith is absolute trust, assurance and confidence in God. The expression “just have faith, it will work out” is used by people to encourage and comfort someone facing serious problems or stressful situations. But just what is faith as described in the Bible, and does it really work?

Before we delve into the question above we must understand or describe the material that faith thrives on .This will help us have a more profound knowledge of how this phenomenon, faith works. Hebrews 4:12; [12]For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

From this context above ,the originator of the manifestation of our experience in this earth realm whether positive or negative is from the heart. The above reason is why living by Faith through this powerful substance ” the word of God ” is a spiritual way and profitable way of living which has lasted the taste of time. So the breeding ground for faith is the heart. it is a definite consciousness of its actions that enables it to be tangible.

Why is having full confidence in the word of God very powerful?

John 1:1-3,14; [1] In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. [2] He was in the beginning with God. [3] All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. From verse 14. [14] And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. So From comparison of scriptures above the word of God is living and a person.

We should rather put our faith on the living God which can not fail rather than material thing e.g. Human , money, investment which can fail So from answering the question above faith works.

What is the works of faith ?

The works of faith is to believe in God

John 6:28-29; [28] Then they said to Him, “What shall we do, that we may work the works of God?”[29] Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent.” Kinds of Faith

1. Dead faith is a faith with no works.
2. Living faith is a faith in action or works .

Living faith is not just believing that God exists. It is demonstrated by one’s service and obedience to God.

The Bible defines faith as Hebrews 11:1, “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”

Faith is the substance or assurance of things we hope for, but have not yet received. Faith (confidence, belief, trust) is also our evidence of that which is not seen, Then what must we anchor our faith to make it profitable? The word ,Who is the word? Jesus, Hebrews 12:1-2; [1] Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, [2] looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

So faith is resting or trusting on the finished works of Christ. Faith is a strong believe on the assurance of what was done for the believer from the word of God. Faith is total obedience to the commandments of God.

How do we increase in Faith?

God will increase our faith if we fervently ask Him for it and seek to draw closer to Him..

1. By Effective Prayer

Philippians 4:6-7; [6] Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; [7] and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. There is receiving and having in the place of prayer. Receiving is the Spiritual transaction which is done by faith.

2. By Constant Word studying

Romans 10:17. “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” The more we feed on the word of God, the more our mind is renewed by the word of God , the more we develop an unwavering belief on the word God and these outlined processes increases faith

Summary

Hebrews 11:6; [6] But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. Whatsoever we must receive from God is by faith.. Faith is the perfect assurance of our rest in the commandments or word God.

Through Faith every spiritual transactions are completed.
